Volunteering in the Community
Volunteering to help out with a community project can be rewarding on so many levels:
- Volunteering can give you relevant experience when applying for jobs, for example, working in a charity shop will give retail experience; driving a community bus will provide driving experience; helping out at gardening project will gives you horticulture or landscaping experience.
- Volunteering shows a level of commitment and motivation to potential employers which is always impressive on a job application.
- Volunteering can give you a good reference when applying for jobs and this can be very useful.
- Volunteering gives you a sense of self worth and renewed confidence that someone values your help.
- Volunteering lets you meet new people and make new friends.
- Volunteering can make you feel better as well as help other people in your community.
- Volunteering is not a ‘soft option’ and you may still have a formal interview, a trial period and relevant training – the same as if you were with a paid employer.
So why wouldn’t you volunteer ?
… What are you waiting for ?
